I Did A Thing...

I did a thing. A few weeks ago I decided to run for school board. It was a thing, despite being asked and encouraged for quite some time, I said I wasn't going to do. I had many good reasons for saying no. Reasons that I clung on to each time someone asked. It wasn't that I doubted that I would be good in the position, I know I have a strong background that could contribute to the legal and governance responsibilities of a director while also helping to shape a culture that is more inclusive for all of our students, families, and staff.

So while there were many reasons to say no, something happened that moved me to yes: people started showing up. Others filed to run too so I didn't feel like I was the only one trying to address long standing issues on our school board. People committed to be on my campaign team if I decided to run. Others started to show up to pick up responsibilities I'd have to give up to devote time to running (and serving, should I win).

And that is what is on my mind this Monday. How we show up for each other, for our communities, for our customers, and for our teams at work. Because that is such a big part of inclusion - showing up. Inclusion is not passive. Inclusion is an active choice that we own to bring people in.

Sometimes that looks like running for school board. Other times, that looks like stepping up to make it possible for someone to run for school board. Today, right in front of you there is a co-worker, neighbor, or family member that needs you to show up. Who is it? How do you need to show up? Today, let's make the world just a little more inclusive.
